Maintain eye contact. As child reaches stage of wanting to sit upright encourage this action by helping to do so. Loosen hold on child to allow more free exploration of movement

Head righting reflex may prevent a child's ability to lie flat. If this arises in water place one hand in mid back region and this should encourage head to lie flat
