By Smart Coach
Part of Smart Coach - Rugby
The focus for this lesson will be on defence. Players will need to be in a stable position with a low stance, feet apart and knees bent in order to rip the band off an opposing player.  The second half of the lesson will be a game in which all skills will be put together from the unit; spatial awareness, picking up, running with and passing the ball, and defending by removing the ripper bands.

Notes

Best position to be in for defence? Stable body position - low stance with feet apart and knees bent.

Warm Up

Rugby - Ripper Grab

Cone off an area that is big enough for the students to run around in, but not so big that there is too much space. Each student will start off the game wearing a ripper belt with two ripper bands attached, one at each hip. When the game starts each player tries to rip off the band of another player, only ripping one at a time. If they are succesfull in removing a ripper band they then place this band on their own belt. When time expires the person with the most amount on their ripper belt will be the winner. Students should be in a stable position at all times in this game, with feet apart and knees bent.

Activities

Rugby - Ultimate Ripper Rugby

Select playing teams with a minimum of 5 players and a maximum of 10. So for a class of 21 or more you will need to select 4 teams, playing on two fields. The playing fields will be set up with a rectangle of cones at each end which is the scoring zone. This scoring zone can be accessed from all 4 sides.

One team will start with the rugby ball and their aim is to run the ball into the scoring zone. Passes can be made in any direction but they need to be rugby passes. The defending team are trying to rip one or both bands off the player with the ball. If the band gets ripped the defender stands still with the ripper band in the air and the player must return to make a pass to a team mate and collect their ripper band. Once the defending team has made 5 rips the ball will be turned over. At the start the defending team is not allowed to intercept or pick up a drop ball. If the attacking team manages to run the ball into the scoring zone they will be awarded one point and the ball will commence again with the other team at half way.

As the game progresses the defending team will now be allowed to intercept and pick up the ball in a drop ball situation. However, a drop ball is not an automatic turnover, it will go to whichever team picks the rugby ball up.
