Developing Passing Skills

This lesson plan focuses on enhancing passing skills in youth volleyball by incorporating drills that improve bumping technique, hand-eye coordination, and teamwork.

Lesson Overview

In this dynamic session, students delve into the fundamental skill of bumping in volleyball, a cornerstone for effective passing. This lesson is designed to not only introduce the technical aspects of bumping but also to enhance students' hand-eye coordination and foster a spirit of teamwork. By engaging in a series of targeted drills, students gain a comprehensive understanding of how to execute precise passes, ensuring that they can contribute effectively to team play.

The goals of this lesson are multifaceted, focusing on the development of individual skills and the cultivation of collaborative strategies. Students aim to achieve the following:

  • Master the basic techniques of bumping to perform accurate and controlled passes.
  • Improve hand-eye coordination through drills that simulate real-game scenarios.
  • Enhance communication and cooperative skills within a team setting.

Key Objectives

Key Objectives
  • Enhance fundamental passing skills by focusing on the bumping technique, ensuring students develop proper form and consistency in their passes.
  • Improve hand-eye coordination through targeted drills that require precise timing and control when receiving and directing the ball.
  • Foster teamwork and communication by engaging students in partner and small group activities where effective passing is crucial for successful play.
  • Emphasize safety by instructing students on proper posture and movement to prevent injuries during passing drills and games.
  • Prepare students by warming up with dynamic stretches and light exercises to increase flexibility and reduce the risk of strain.
Equipment Required
  • Volleyballs (enough for each pair or small group to have one)
  • Volleyball net (or a suitable division line to simulate a net)
  • Cones or markers for setting up drill stations and boundaries
  • Whistle for the instructor to manage drills and transitions
  • Scoreboard or tally sheet to keep track of progress and encourage friendly competition
  • First aid kit for addressing any minor injuries or safety concerns
Step 1 of 6

Dynamic Stretching and Jogging

10 minutes

Begin the session with a warm-up routine designed to prepare students both physically and mentally. This routine includes:

  • Light Jogging: Start with a few laps around the gym or designated area to increase heart rate and circulation.
  • Arm Circles: Perform small to large arm circles to loosen up the shoulders and improve range of motion.
  • High Knees: Encourage students to bring their knees up towards their chest while jogging in place, enhancing flexibility and coordination.
  • Leg Swings: Stand on one leg and swing the other leg forward and backward, then side to side, to stretch the hip flexors and hamstrings.
  • Torso Twists: With feet shoulder-width apart, twist the torso from side to side to warm up the core and increase flexibility.

Ensure each student maintains proper form and gradually increases intensity to avoid injury. This warm-up sets the tone for the rest of the session, promoting focus and engagement.

Step 2 of 6

Introduction to Bumping

15 minutes

Begin by explaining the fundamentals of bumping in volleyball. Highlight the importance of proper technique and communication during play. Focus on the following key points:

  • Hand Positioning: Demonstrate how to create a platform with your hands by placing one hand over the other, thumbs aligned and pointing forward. Emphasize keeping the wrists locked and arms straight to ensure a solid surface for bumping.
  • Stance: Instruct students to stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and weight balanced on the balls of their feet. Stress the importance of maintaining a low and ready position to move quickly in any direction.
  • Communication: Explain the role of communication in a successful volleyball play. Encourage students to call out for the ball and use clear, loud voices to avoid collisions and confusion.

Conclude this segment by encouraging students to ask questions and clarify any doubts about the bumping technique.

Step 3 of 6

Partner Bump Drill

15 minutes

In this activity, students pair up to practice bumping the volleyball back and forth. The focus is on improving accuracy and control while enhancing communication between partners.

  • Pair up students and have them stand approximately 10 feet apart.
  • Provide each pair with a volleyball.
  • Emphasize the correct hand positioning and stance for an effective bump.
  • Instruct the students to begin gently, focusing on maintaining a controlled and accurate pass to their partner.
  • Encourage partners to communicate by calling out each other's names before bumping the ball.
  • Challenge pairs to increase the distance between them gradually as they become more comfortable and accurate.
  • Rotate partners every few minutes to expose students to different playing styles and levels of skill.

This drill encourages teamwork and helps students refine their bumping technique through repeated practice and constructive feedback. Encourage students to focus on consistent and precise passes to build confidence and skill in their bumping abilities.

Step 4 of 6

Bumping Relay Race

20 minutes

Organize students into small teams, ideally consisting of 4-6 members each. The aim is to pass the ball using bumping techniques from one end of the court to the other as quickly as possible. This activity focuses on enhancing speed, teamwork, and communication skills.

  • Set up a starting line and a finish line at opposite ends of the court.
  • Each team lines up behind the starting line with the first player holding a volleyball.
  • On the instructor's signal, the first player bumps the ball to the next teammate, who must be standing at a designated spot a few meters away.
  • Each player bumps the ball to the next teammate until it reaches the last player in line.
  • The last player then runs to the front of the line and starts the process again in the opposite direction.
  • The relay continues until all players have had a chance to start the bumping sequence.
  • Teams are encouraged to communicate and support each other to improve their timing and accuracy.

After completing the relay race, gather the students to discuss what strategies worked best and how they can improve their teamwork and bumping skills.

Step 5 of 6

Target Practice

15 minutes

In this activity, students work on improving their precision and strategic thinking by aiming to bump the ball into designated zones on the court.

  • Divide the court into several target zones using cones or markers. Each zone should represent a different point value based on difficulty.
  • Have students form pairs, with one player serving as the bumper and the other as the target setter.
  • The target setter stands in one of the zones, while the bumper stands at the opposite end of the court.
  • On the instructor's signal, the bumper attempts to bump the ball into the zone where the target setter is standing.
  • If the ball lands in the targeted zone, the pair receives the corresponding point value for that zone.
  • Rotate roles after a set number of attempts to ensure both players practice bumping and target setting.
  • Encourage pairs to communicate and strategize on which zones to target for maximum points.
  • Conclude the drill by discussing strategies that worked well and areas for improvement.
Step 6 of 6

Stretching and Reflection

10 minutes

Cool-Down Stretching Routine

  • Lead students in gentle stretching exercises focused on the arms, shoulders, and legs to relax muscles after the drills.
  • Include deep breathing exercises to help calm the mind and body.

Reflection Activity

  • Gather students in a circle and ask them to share one thing they learned about bumping techniques or teamwork.
  • Encourage students to discuss any challenges they faced during the drills and how they overcame them.
  • Facilitate a short discussion on the importance of communication in volleyball and how it can improve their game.
