PFDs on Front - P01 "London Bridge"

Teacher holds 1 holey mat against wall to create tunnel Parent with child on PFD move through tunnel Teacher sprinkles water on child's head in tunnel Continue in circle to repeat Circle - children and parents in pairs move around in a circle "London Bridge"

Arms and body should be on TOP of PFD. If child is holding on properly, parent can pull child along by holding handle with one hand and put other hand under child's chest or belly to help with balance.

PFDs: Rollover - P01

Rollover from front to back Line - child on stairs/sitting on pool edge OR Circle - child on mat facing parent

For children who have the strength, practice rolling over from back to front. (This is more difficult than front to back because PFDs are designed to roll to back.)

Front Glide - P06 push off

From stairs or island Child pushes off into front glide to parent Parent catches child Parent initiates submersion and releases child into swim back to stairs or island

Starting position is crucial - hands in front, shoulders in water, push forward & not jump up. Use mirror or sinkable frog/sharks to encourage child to look down.

Pick Up Objects - P01

Parent initiates submersion Pick up object from bottom of stairs Line - child on stairs

Start with child sitting on stairs, toy at feet, work through progressions: 1) reach for toy, 2) with bubbles, 3) with face in if ready. Put toy at appropriate depth. Starting OFF the stairs, child with teacher/parent, teacher/parent initiates ready swim and help child submerge to appropriate depth.
