Child at stairs
Child walks across stairs No face in OR with bubbles OR face in water blowing bubbles & looking ahead At stairs, One at a time
Start on a step where child is comfortable but as deep in water as possible. Encourage child to walk without leaning legs against stairs and with as little assistance as possible.

Elevator button is teacher's nose Child presses button Elevator goes up to 1st floor (lift child up slightly) Then 2nd floor (lift child up a bit more) Then down to the basement (underwater) and child blows bubbles One at a time
Be aware of child's readiness to be submerged at a level that is comfortable for him/her - mouth, eyes, or full submersion. Let child's weight take them underwater - do NOT pull underwater.
Child
Hands in front holding equipment, arms straight but not over-extended Kick on front
Start with shoulders in water so child pushes forward and does not "fall" in water. Be sure child is holding triangle board properly - thumbs on bottom and other fingers on top, hands apart / close to outside corners of triangle board (simulating hand placement of pencil swim), arms straight.
Kick holding triangle board
For more advanced swimmers, hold a toy or ring instead of a triangle board.
Hands in front, arms straight but not over-extended Kick on front through hoop
Always have child start by reaching hands forward. Watch for correct hand placement (pencil - hands in front OR "i" - hands on top of legs/thighs) and straight arms to encourage proper body position.
