Lesson Overview

Year 3-5 - Lesson 1 - Passing
For children to be able to pass the ball to each other and over the net with correct technique.

Key Objectives

What are the key points involved in a Fistball pass? (Closed fist, hit with the forearm) What can you do to make it easier for yourself to hit the ball? (Move you feet, keep your eye on the ball)
Step 1 of 2

Warm Up

Set up two lines of spots with enough space between them to pass the fistballs (roughly 5-7metres). Students pair up with 1 fistball between them and face their partner on the spot that is opposite them. For correct technique, ensure that the hand is in a closed fist formation and the ball is hit up into the air. The ball should make contact with the forearm, however if the ball makes contact with a closed fist then it is not a violation, whereas an open hand is a violation.

Fistball - Pair Passing

Set up two lines of spots with enough space between them to pass the fistballs (roughly 5-7metres). Students pair up with 1 fistball between them and face their partner on the spot that is opposite them. For correct technique, ensure that the hand is in a closed fist formation and the ball is hit up into the air. The ball should make contact with the forearm, however if the ball makes contact with a closed fist then it is not a violation, whereas an open hand is a violation.

Step 2 of 2

Activities

In pairs, partner 1 passes the ball to partner 2 using their forearm with a closed fist. Partner 2 must let the ball bounce before passing the ball over the net using their forearm with a closed fist also. There will be a pair on the other side of the net that will catch the ball and set up to do exactly the same (for more detailed technique refer to video).

Fistball - Passing Over

In pairs, partner 1 passes the ball to partner 2 using their forearm with a closed fist. Partner 2 must let the ball bounce before passing the ball over the net using their forearm with a closed fist also. There will be a pair on the other side of the net that will catch the ball and set up to do exactly the same (for more detailed technique refer to video).

Fistball - Up The River

Set up two lines of cones about 8-10 metres apart to create the "river". At one end or the river create a target area, roughly 1 metre by 1 metre. A team will consist of four players working together passing the ball up the river using correct fistball technique. A team scores a point by passing the ball to each other up the river, and getting the ball to land in the target area. Once completed the team will move back to the starting point and await their next turn. The ball is only allowed to bounce once, and then must be passed to another team member up the court toward the target either using a closed fist or part of the forearm before the ball bounces a second time.
