How do we tackle a player to obtain posession of the hockey ball? (get close enough to attacking player, take bottom hand of the grip off hockey stick and use snake tongue to take possession of hockey ball).
Have students positioned along a line with their hockey sticks sleeping and facing the coach to observe a brief explanation/demonstration of how a tackle is made correctly.
1) in haka position the defender will get close enough to player that has possession of hockey ball
2) defender will remove hand at bottom of grip to maximise reach by leaving hand on at the top of grip
3) students will now picture hockey stick like a "snake tongue" as it shoots out of its mouth at a high speed to catch prey by pulling it back toward mouth. The stick will move in a similar manner as it will reach out quickly, wrap the hook round hockey ball and move back toward body.
Have students practise this without a ball and move along the line observing students execute properly by removing the correct hand (bottom) from stick. Once students have mastered this, they can then move into game.
The game starts off with students in a coned square. There are two types of players in this game; cops and robbers. The cops dribble their ball (using the correct grip technique and body position – haka) while the robbers try and tackle them and take their ball for themselves. When this happens the players swap roles; the robber now becomes the cop and the cop becomes the robber. Start off with only a few robbers and this can be increased during the activity to make it harder, by removing more hockey balls from the game.
Split class into two even teams. Get the students to line up along the side of the court behind a cone. The coach will call a number, for example THREE, the first three students from each team’s line will run around a cone and then head towards their goal. The hockey ball is rolled in the direction of one team (avoid rolling the ball into the middle as students collide) the team that gathers the ball will try and score a goal. Sticks must remain as low to the ground as possible and no big hits. The game ends when either a team scores a goal or the coach blows their whistle. That group of students return to the back of their line and the coach will call a new number.
Each team has to make three push passes and traps before they can score.
