Year 5-8 - Lesson 1 - Forehand + Backhand

By Smart Coach
Part of Smart Coach - Pickleball
To introduce racquet skills that will help with the facilitation of creating more accurate forehand and backhand shots by practising the associated techniques

Notes

How do we grip the racquet? (handshake grip)

What position should our body be in before hitting the ball? (side on to the ball)

What height should our racquet start at before hitting the ball? (hip height)

How can we generate more power into our shot? (stepping into the ball - shifting body weight onto front foot AND using a backswing before striking the ball)

Where should our eyes be focused? (at the ball before making contact and while making contact)

Once contact has been made with the ball, what should our body be doing? (following through to ensure ball is moving in direction of target/designated zone)

Warm Up

Hand Hitter

Pair students up in the class (one will have a tennis ball "thrower" and the other will be the "hitter" with NO racquet - will use their arm) and move them off so they have enough space for themselves without bumping into other players. When the coach/teacher calls out BEGIN, the thrower will gently toss the tennis ball at the hitter but only to one side (forehand) repeatedly ten times. The hitter must strike the tennis ball after it has bounced and hit it back to the thrower. After the hitter has had ten turns, both players will swap roles so the new hitter will have ten turns at hitting the tennis ball. Players will then proceed to throw and hit on the backhand side of the body (will be hitting the tennis ball with the underneath of the hand) ten times each.

PROGRESSION:

- To add a further element, allow the thrower to randomise the side they toss the ball to making the hitter react and adapt. For every hit made, a point will be awarded. However if the ball is missed, the thrower will recieve a point. Ensure players swap roles to allow the swapped player an opportunity to beat the score.

Activities

Racquet Technique

Before starting the next activity, get students to gather round and brielfy go over the technique used. The "ready" position steps to execute both forehand/backhand are as follows:

1) Use the handshake method to grip the handle of the Pickleball racquet. This will ensure the racquet is held correctly with flat surfaces facing forward
2) Position feet shoulder width apart for a stable and balanced stance with knees slightly bent
3) The racquet will start in a stationary state positioned by the hip
4) As the ball approaches, move opposite leg to hitting arm forward closer to the ball (assisst with generating power) and push racquet back to create a long swing which will increase power ("backswing")
5) Maintain eye contact with the ball as you strike it with the flat side of the racquet
6) Body should be following through to ensure the ball is travelling in the intended direction or at target

NOTE: The back hand uses the exact same start position, however the racquet will start on the opposite side of the body with the hitting arm crossing over the stomach in order for the racquet to be positioned by the hip.

Battle Of The Squares

Students will work with the same partner from the previous activity, however both players will now use Pickleball Racquets and Pickleball ball. Each pair will move to a square marked out by cones with a centre line that divides the square in two creating a half each. One student will be the thrower, whilst the other will be the hitter. The ball will be tossed to one side ten times, then to the other side until players swap roles. The hitter will return the ball back to the thrower by striking it using the correct technique. Once this task has been completed, students will now both use racquets simultaneously and hit the ball back and forth across the centre line creating a rally. Once enough time has passed to allow students to practise, instruct students to hit the ball to each other without it bouncing on the ground at all, known as a "volley." Again, once students have had enough time to practise this skill, progress to putting all skills together. Each pair will compete against each other by hitting the ball back and forth until a point is awarded.
- If the ball is hit out of the playing boundary a point will be awarded
- When the Pickleball Ball bounces more than once inside a players half, a point will be awarded as the ball is only allowed one bounce

Allow students some time competing against their partner and to practise the skills. Once the time is up, see who managed to beat their partner.

Elimination

Divide the class into three groups of eight OR ten students (depending on class size, even numbered groups are preferred) and have them move to a playing area in the shape of large rectangle divded up into multiple squares (eight or ten). Each large group will have one Pickleball ball and all players will have a Pickleball racquet each. All squares will be numbered from one to the maximum amount of squares there are with one being "king" square. Players are competing against each other to get from their square in a descending order to the "king". Rules from the prior activities apply (with the exclusion of a points system):
- If the ball is hit outside the playing area, the player that made the shot will go to the highest numbered square (eight or ten)
- The ball may only bounce once inside you sqaure and must be hit immediately after, if it bounces twice inside the players square then they must return to the highest numbered square
- To make the game more in line with the rules of Pickleball, players must hit the ball above waist height (create an imaginery net) to prevent wreckless players trying to smash the ball into others square (which can decrease the quality of the activity and increase the difficulty of returning a shot)
- Players will be allowed to hit volleys (hitting the ball before it has bounced inside their square) during gameplay

PROGRESSION:

Introduce elimination rounds where players will move to the outside of the playing area if they have either; hit the ball outside the boundary or if the ball has bounced more than once inside their square. Move the players around accordingly so there are no spaces between squares. The last player left at the end will be declare the winner. They will then start in king base for the next round and everyone else can move to a square of their choice.
To increase the difficulty, when players get eliminated leave the remaining players in their current square so now their shots become far riskier as they have to hit the ball a greater distance to others.
