Miniball - Lesson 6 - Rebounding

By Smart Coach
Part of Smart Coach - After School Programmes
To gain the knowledge on how to box out and rebound with the correct technique.

Notes

Why do we box out? (so we have a better chance than our opponent to get the rebound) Why do we get low on our box out? (so that we are stronger)

Warm Up

Miniball - Boxing Out Practice

Players pair up and face each other roughly a meter apart. One person is to pretend to shoot a basketball and once this happens the other person must box out and then jump out as if they were grabbing a rebound. Players box out by stepping across their partner and making contact with their back.

Modifications

Add in an actual basketball.

Activities

Miniball - Box Out Wheel

Players are split into two teams. One team creates a circle around the outside of a basketball that is placed on the ground, and move in a clockwise direction. The other team creates an outer circle around them and moves anti-clockwise. When the coach blows the whistle, the outer players must try to get the ball, and the inner players must box them out.

Modifications

Add a time limit for box out. Change the number of players on the outside or inside.

Miniball - Game

A game of miniball is made up of 5 players on each team. Each quarter will last 5 minutes with a 1 minute break between the quarters and at half time. Miniball is played with the same rules as standard basketball, not including the "Backcourt" rule and any rules that include time allowances (e.g. 3 second, 5 second or 24 second rules.) Also there are no free throws, instead any foul will result in an inbound from out of court. Miniball also has extra rules as follows:

Each player has a bib on that is a different colour to anyone else in their team, and can only defend another player with the same colour band (e.g. red band can only defend red band.)

After a basket, the team that scored must retreat to half way and allow the other team to advance the ball to that point before defending.

Team work is actively encouraged and any players being selfish with the ball will be reminded to play as a team.
