What things are involved in a correct chest pass? (Ball starts at the chest, 'W' with hands, flicking the wrists, stepping into the pass)
What should you do if you are trying to receive a pass? (Create the 'W', move into space)
The students pair up and line up opposite their partner - or find space for them and their partner. The coach goes over the passing technique for a chest pass; make the letter W with your hands on the ball, start with the ball positioned in front of chest, step into pass, flat pass to your partners chest and finish in superman position pointing toward your target/partner. Optional (if there is enough time in the lesson)
Once the students have practiced the chest pass they will move onto the bounce bass. The coach will then go over the passing technique for a bounce pass; coming from the hip, bouncing on the ground 2/3 of the distance, ball staying low.
Use a softer ball that is easier to catch.
Split the class into smaller groups of 4-8 with one group inside their own playing area. Teams start in a circle and must pass the ball around to each other in the same sequence while saying each others name as they pass. Once this is mastered, the same game is played, however players are moving around in their area rather than standing in a circle. The players must still pass the ball in a certain sequence. The next progression is to remain moving with a repeated sequence of passing, but no pass can be done twice in a row. For example, if player A receives a bounce pass, then they must pass in a different way to player B.
When playing this game, passing technique must be emphasized. Players should create a W with their hands on the ball when catching and passing. They must flick their wrists outwards when they pass and step forward into the pass.
Create a smaller playing space to allow less room for movement and to potentially shorten the length of each pass. Change the type of pass that needs to be completed each time. Place less people into each team to allow players more time passing the ball. This will also make it easier for each team to successfully complete a sequence of passing.
Create a 2m x 2m square with two cones and two spots all of the same colour. Split the class into groups of three. Two students are the "passers" and they will stand behind the cones with a netball each. The third student is the "mover". They will start on a spot opposite one of the passers and receive a chest pass, they pass it back and then run to the other spot. If the player runs to the right they will land on their right foot first (the outside leg) if the player runs to their left they will land on their left foot first. After a set amount of time change the runner over with one of the passers. Repeat the activity using a bounce pass
Key points:
- Landing in a balanced position on their outside leg first
- Chest pass: W on the back of the ball and hands ready at their chest to recieve a pass
- Bounce pass: Starts lower (belly button height) and bounces 3/4 of the way to their partner
If you need to have a group of 2 just have one passer and one runner and set up in a triangle formation. Use a bigger or smaller square.
Divide the class into 3 groups which consist of 8 players (4v4 - depending on class numbers). Set up a playing area with 4 hoops spaced around the outside of the area. Place one spot in the middle of the playing area as the starting spot. Players are split into two teams with one team on attack and one team on defence. One player from the attacking team must start on the spot and the others spread out. It is the job of the attackers to try and score by moving the ball around (player with ball may not move their feet) amongst their team and shooting the netball into one of the 4 hoops when the opportunity arises. If a point is scored or there is a turnover (intercept), the other team will start on attack from the middle spot.
Create a bigger space to encourage more passes before a point is scored. Take away a number of defenders to make it easier for the attackers to pass. Add in a rule where a certain amount of passes must occur before a point is scored.
