Obstacle Course

This obstacle course has a variety of elements that each child completes like a relay race.

Split groups into teams of 4-5 (depending on available equipment). Time how long it takes for each team to all complete the course (time stops once all team members are sitting down in a line). Take points (10-30 seconds) off each time there is an error.

One person from each team goes at a time. Can make it more fun and obvious who is in whos team by the person running wearing a bib of a different color. Next person in their team can't go until they have been given the bib (like a batton in relays).

Teams can start at different stations if starting them all at one will make it congested. Volunteers/teachers/coaches could help with timing and making sure teams aren't cheating.

Set up the course in a circle so no one is crossing over and getting confused of order. Can make it more interesting between elements with hurdles to run over, cones/poles to weave through, or signs that explain how to move (eg must star jump, run backward, crawl, hop, spin around 3x etc).

Explain and show each element clearly before starting. Have a practice round/run through first if time allows.

Hoola Hoop Run

Place two lanes of hoola hoops (approx 5 each lane) close to each other. Set up multiple lanes if enough hoops to do so.

Children must place each foot in the hoops running down the lane.

Deductions: If a hoop is missed, deduct time.

Egg and Spoon Race

Children must run from starting cone to end cone and back without dropping "egg" off spoon.

- Place a hoop along the race for children to walk around (in a circle) 3x before moving on.

- Place 3 small hurdles for children to walk over.

- Thumb or other hand can't hold onto egg.

Deductions:

If egg dropped off spoon deduct time.

(Can always use a large ball on top of an upside tall cone like an icecream if you don't have egg and spoon).

Tarp/Parachute Crawl

Place large tarp or parachute on ground with weights (buckets, crates, people standing etc) on corners. Children must crawl through tarp out to other side before carrying on to next activity.

Bean Bag Balance

Children have to balance beanbag on their head from one cone to another and then back to starting cone before moving on.

Can place rope or other skinny object along for them to walk along like a tight rope if desired.

Deductions:

If beanbag hits ground can deduct time, or if repeatly holding on to it.

Sack Race

Set up a circle of cones approx 10-15m wide.

Children must get into sack and jump around the circle of cones until back at starting point.

Hit the Cone

Students get 3-5 tennis balls to throw from a marked line at a tall cone with a ball on top of it. Can move to next station once ball has been hit off. If they miss with all their tries they must collect balls and run back to marked line to try again.

Deductions: deduct time if they can't hit ball and choose to move on.

* needs to be reset each time ball has been hit off for the next person, so make sure someone is there to do that (teacher, coach etc). Could also use beanbags/throw into hoop for younger children.

Extras

Spin around 10x before starting, or after each obstacle.

Add a ball that they have to dribble between each obstacle or through cones.
