What are some things we can do to help us land? (arms out, knees bent) What part of our foot do we land on? (balls)
Children will be running around an area that is blocked off by hoops. There are 2-3 taggers and the rest of the kids are runners. When a runner gets tagged, they then have to run to a hoop and exit the area by jumping in and out of the hoop. They will then need to find another hoop so they are able to get back into the game. They have to repeat the landing techniques to enter back into the taggers area.
Kids will stand on one side of a line on the ground. They will start facing towards the line and this means they are "on the bank". When the coach yells out "in the river", the children will jump forward over the line meaning they are now "in the river". The coach will then yell out “on the bank”, and the kids have to jump backwards onto the other side of the line where they began. The children need to be landing with two feet planted on the ground, shoulder width apart and with bent knees in a stable position.
To challenge the students, the coach can add in an elimination round and enforce the following progressions/rules:
1) speed up the game - if students can't keep up with the speed they will be eliminated
2) if the student gets tricked by jumping to the wrong area they will be eliminated
3) if incorrect jumping/landing technique is not used (e.g. stepping with one foot) - students will be eliminated
4) if students are losing their balance due to poor technique they will be eliminated.
When students get eliminated they must still continue playing but will do it opposite the students that are left. Try and position yourself in front of a line so it is an easy transition for players being eliminated to continue playing on this line once they have been eliminated.
Set Up:
Spots are set up in four straight rows, leading out to selection of cones (the swamp) varying in size and shape. Place bean bags under random cones (aka frogs). Place the hula hoops next to the spots to be at the front of the students line.
Aim of the game is for the students to practice their landing/jumping/balancing skills. The goal for the students is to find as many bean bags as possible and get them back to their teams hoop in the time alotted. Whilst completing the task given by the coach.
Chlidren are to line up in teams of 4. When the coach says go student at th front of the line will hop on to each of the spots into the area of scattered cones. Student then picks up 1 cone to find a bean bag, if successful the student will jump back on the spots to their team and place the bean bag back into the hoop. High five the next person so they can go. If there is no bean bag under the cone the student must flip the cone so others know that cone has been checked.
To make it more challenging for the older juniors the lines of spots can be moved in a more scattered order. Coaches could say to the students to only jump on certain colored spots.
